This
project involved development of a GIS database and application
for Regional Planning in Southern Sri Lanka. With enormous
volumes of data available in the form of maps and tables,
GIS turned out to be the most appropriate tool for a project
of this type.
The
project was carried out for Nippon Koei Co. Ltd., Japan on
a turnkey basis to develop a geographic data base
GDB)
and perform the necessary analyses for sectors like:
- Land
Use
- Agriculture
- Transport
- Communication
A
Memorandum of Understanding between the Governments of Sri
Lanka and Japan envisages to finalize a Master Plan Study
for the development of Southern Sri Lanka. The Japan International
Cooperation Agency - JICA an important cooperative organization
in this project is a team of experts drawn from various sectors
of Regional Planning. Tata Infotech consultants interacted
with these experts to develop a viable GIS application.
With
the study area - Southern Sri Lanka comprising 50 divisions
spread over 11,000 sq. Kms, the project envisaged:
- Developing
a geographic database (GDB) in ArcInfo
Performing sector specific analysis and bringing out map
and tabular outputs
- Regional
Information System (RIS) application development to help
sector experts make on-line queries and what-if analyses
in ArcView
- Preparation
and printing of GIS map book
This
project used ArcInfo and ArcView on Pentium PC and Sun workstation.
