Wi-Fi hotspots have received
a string of corporate endorsements in recent months, making
airports, restaurants and coffee chains into locations where
a computer user can connect to the Internet. Predictions by
analysts show that the number of Wi-Fi networks will exceed
200,000 in five years, up from 28,000 locations this year,
with the fastest growth being in Asia.
Wi-Fi technology in its
current state is designed for high, megabit data rates within
a restricted coverage area ranging from hundreds to a few
thousand feet. As opposed to cellular technologies, which
have a range of a few miles, Wi-Fi was designed primarily
to serve as a wireless extension to the wired network. The
challenge therefore lies in providing Wi-Fi solutions for
large-scale deployments such as metropolitan areas that are
far away from the wired network.
The broadband cellular Wi-Fi mesh architecture
expands Wi-Fi’s coverage by eliminating the need to
wire every node of the Wi-Fi hotspots. The architecture leverages
an advanced, wireless backhaul solution that is flexible,
fault-tolerant and scalable. The wireless backhaul will dramatically
change the economics of Wi-Fi, thereby enabling low-cost,
metro-scale coverage.
