Clients Project

British Telecom Project, UK

British Telecommunication/External Plant and Records (BT/EPR) project is a large scale GIS project designed to provide this UK telecommunications giant with a GIS based application to maintain image, spatial and attribute data in a central ORACLE database. Tata Infotech consultants worked on the design and development of the entire application in conjunction with SHL Inc. and Unisys UK consultants.

BT wanted all maps and related documents to be digitized and stored in computers as raster information and all vector data to be stored in an Oracle database. All the paper maps were digitized and attribute data attached.
The project used Vision* GIS software with Motif/X-Windows as a front end GUI on Sun SPARC machines with Oracle database on Unisys U6000. Vision* was integrated with Unisys ARGIS network planning tool for cable management.

The project comprised two phases - Copper cable network and Fiber optics cable network. The application developed helped the network planner in laying of cables, ducts, creating exchange areas, finding the shortest / optimal path of laying cables, printing of maps, etc.
