Tata Infotech has developed an application in the area of VoIP. This application has been contributed to the US-based Vovida organisation - an open source initiative sponsored by Cisco, and is available for download under the name SIPRG at www.vovida.org/applications/siprg

Called a "SIP based Residential Gateway", it is an IP Telephony Gateway application that enables calls to be made to wire-line telephones from a multimedia PC running a SIP phone application (such as MSN messenger) and vice versa, opening up a channel of communication between the two mediums.

SIP or Session Internet Protocol is a widely acceptable protocol that has been developed by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). IETF is an international organisation that develops standards for communication over the Internet.
