Tata Infotech education arm sees revenues doubling
despite slowdown
Financial Express - Sept 14, 2001 |
Tata Infotech Ltd’s education services
division aims to double its revenues in the current year despite
the slowdown in the information technology (IT) education and
training segment.
The division reported revenues of Rs 32 crore
last year, and is gunning for Rs 68 crore in the current financial
year, according to its head, Mr Rahul Thapan.
"We are witnessing a downturn in our industry.
In the first quarter, the student enrolment has gone down by 20
per cent compared with last year’s number. But in the second
quarter, the situation is better. We have come up with a series
of new plans to counter the slowdown," he said.
Tata Infotech hopes that its new idea of creating
an IT curriculum based on a combination of business, application
and technology skills will benefit students in this slowdown scenario.
It has added a new semester in the high- end G-tech course called
emerging industry, where students will get training on IT applications
related to telecom, banking and insurance industry.
Said Mr Thapan: "Only technology training
will not help a student now. The student has to learn application
skills specific to vertical industry requirements. The student
has to understand the customer needs in areas of business and
application. Unless the students have specialised skills, they
will not get premium jobs."
Along with the specialised training programme,
Tata Infotech is tapping the corporate training market and expanding
its education centres outside India.
"Wherever Tata Infotech is working on systems
integration, we can offer training services. It can come as a
total package to the corporates," said Mr Thapan.
