Financial Express - Apr 30, 2001

Tata Infotech a division of Tata Sons, will open upto 10 more overseas computer training centres in the next six months as part of its plans to start 50 international centres by the end of 2002.

"We are opening three training centres in South Africa in July, and two more in Bangladesh in June," Chief of the company in education division Rahul Thapan said.

The company's Nepal centres are also coming up shortly, he said. At present, tata Infotech has centres in Sri Lanka(which was started one year ago). Bangladesh and Philippines.

In its overseas businesses, the revenue model would be licence fee plus revenue-sharing with the respective state governments, which is in the range of 80:20, he said.

Thapan, however, didn't reveal the investment plan for the overseas expansion.

In all the international centres, tata Infotech will provide the faculty for a while to train the local teachers and operate the centres through franchisee route, Mr. Thapan said:

The move behind sprucing up international operations is seen as an effort to derive more than 15 per cent revenue from the education division of the company.

"We are reorienting our growth strategy to make education services to contribute at least 15 per cent of the overall revenue of Tata Infotech Business," Mr. Thapan said.

The company is ramping up its domestic operations as well, whereby it is planning to open over 400 centres from the current 200 by 2002-end, he said.

Tata Infotech recently tied up with smart force of the US, which provides interactive software for IT training.

Last week, the company had announced a partnership with Microsoft to introduce a language programme for software professionals based on the .Net platform. The programme, C sharp, which is an object-oriented language derived from C and C++, will heop programmers to build solutions for Microsoft .Net platform quickly.

The programme is also aimed at professionals from other streams for upgradations and build applications on the .Net platform.

In the next phase, visual studio, SQL server, Biztalk and messaging would be offered on the .Net platform, Mr. Rhapan said. The company's other alliances have been with Baan, Edexel, Intel and Onward Novell.

Tata Infotech's other three divisions are systems integration which contributes 70 per cent of the company's total income, software business and manufacturing division.
