"Tata Infotech Education to focus on industry-specific
module
Financial Express - Apr 4, 2001 |
New Delhi: Tata Infotech Education,
a division of Tata Infotech, is going in for repositioning with
focus on creating industry-specific modules. To this end, the
company has introduced a specialisation semester in the last leg
of its G-Tech programme where the student specialises in particular
industry-related software applications. The repositioning is significant
in view of the growing concern about the feasibility of the existing
training programmes.
According to Mr Rahul Thapan, head, education
service division, Tata Infotech Ltd, the refocus on application
from concept has been prompted by the shift in the industry's
perception to look for application-based growth. In a scenario,
where the companies let the platform decide the application, Tata
Infotech has also moved to applications.
The G-Tech course, where the new module is being
applied, is an 8-semester programme spread over 30 months. The
last semester of this programme will now be emerging as industry
semester which in turn would focus on industry specialisation
and industry orientation. The latter would consist of taking customer
care, legal aspects, presentation skills and ethics into account,
points out Mr Thapan. This course conforms to HND curriculum (Higher
National Diploma) from Edexcel International, a leading force
in education and training in UK. The company has also entered
into a tie-up with University of Hertfordshire, UK, to confer
upon the students a B. Tech degree in information technology from
the university. This is a post-G-Tech programme and the higher
national diploma awarded after G-Tech makes the students eligible
for the University of Hertfordshire programme. This classroom-based
programme will cost Rs 60,000.
The company is also in the process of finalising
a similar pact with a US university for one of the modules of
the G Tech programme which is yet to be identified, Mr Thapan
said.
The company is also expanding its base in India
and plans to set up 200 centres nationwide in the current fiscal.
It also plans to increase its presence abroad with 50 centres
to be established this year. It already has 10 centres abroad
through the franchise route.
Tata Infotech Ltd entered the field of mass computer
training in 1992 to fulfil the need for quality computer education
through Tata Infotech Premier Training Centre. It was the first
in the education industry in India to receive the ISO 9001 for
"courseware design, development and conduct of career, professional
and short-term courses including corproate training in the information
technology area" from Standardisation Testing and Quality
Control (STQC) directorate, Department of Electronics for its
centres in Delhi and Chetpet in Chennai.
