Natural Language Processing
Natural Language Processing (NLP) opens up new opportunities for
providing better quality service to the customer by providing them
information they require intelligently, without requiring them to
know about any formal language. Tata Infotech has developed several
tools and techniques for natural language processing, which can
be utilized in context of different advanced human machine interfaces.
OASIS,
the Query Answering System, developed as a result of on-going research
at CSRL uses NLP technology to answer a user query posed in plain
English. The system can understand the intent of the question and
hence answer queries intelligently. Spell check, provision for giving
best approximate answers available to the system when there is no
exact answer exists, and memory are some of the features that have
been built into the system. The system can be deployed over Internet
and can be easily customised to different applications.
The
Interactive Query Answering System, GyanMantra, developed at TIRG
Delhi interprets user query with background domain knowledge. The
knowledge-based interpretation enables the system to solicit contextual
information interactively and to ascertain the user's information
need accurately. It is particularly suitable for maintenance help-desk
applications and in multi-lingual scenario.

Speech
Technology and IVR
The
core competencies of CSRL in this area are in speech recognition
and synthesis, and in providing speech-enabled applications.
The
Isolated Word Recognition (IWR) engine developed by CSRL can recognise
words spoken in isolation. The engine can recognize a word from
a vocabulary of about 200 words with very good accuracy and is being
used in several IVR applications around the country. We have achieved
good progress in Keyword Spotting and Connected Digit (number) recognition
systems.
The
pre-recorded and spliced speech used with conventional IVR systems
is very restrictive. The formant based Text to Speech (TTS) engine
developed by CSRL can render unconstrained speech. Moreover, our
TTS engine is tuned for Indian accent and is capable of taking care
of Indian proper names. This speech synthesizer can be easily integrated
with any IVR application, in addition to its use in applications
like voice Portals, text readers for e-learning, email or news reading
etc.
CSRL
has developed a set of tools to automatically categorise the accent
of a person based on his or her speech samples. Both the articulatory
capability and the speaking style of the speaker are accessed automatically
using signal processing and speech technology.
ATG
has also provided customised IVR solutions for several industry
sectors, such as the airlines, stock exchanges, etc. Some innovative
IVR based solutions from Tata Infotech are
-
AutoAttendant - Voice enabled PABX where the caller speaks out
the name to get an incoming call is directed towards the desired
extension.
- Voice
Portals - for current news, live cricket, top rated movies, etc.
- StockTalk
- where the caller speaks out the company's name to hear its latest
stock quote.

Script
Technology
CSRL
has developed a new method for on-line and off-line recognition
of signatures and cursive script through its in-house R&D effort.
The system uses simple, yet robust and easily extractable shape
features in the handwritten text. The technology is useful for hand
held script input devices and signature verification applications.
The
Personalized Cursive Script Generator developed at CSRL converts
'typed' text to a natural cursive script which resembles the handwriting
of a person. At the heart of the system is a state of the art algorithm,
which converts typed text into cursive script using the sample alphabet
set written in isolation by the person. This is a lean multi platform
software and can be easily embedded into an application.

Computer
Telephony Integration
The
SIP Residential Gateway (SIPRG) is an open source application (downloadable
at www.vovida.org)
based on the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP). The SIPRG is an
IP Telephony Gateway that allows a SIP User Agent to make and receive
calls between the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) and a
SIP-based network such as VOCAL. The SIPRG has been developed with
the VOVIDA SIP stack version 1.3.0, and uses a QuickNet LineJACK
card (www.quicknet.com)
for connecting an Analog telephone line.
